Week-long professional development opportunities for teachers are held each summer at the East-West Center in Honolulu. Through a collaboration among the East-West Center, the Arizona Memorial Museum Association, and the National Park Service, over 300 teachers from around the country have attended the workshop since 2004. Activities included lectures and tours to the Arizona Memorial and other World War II sites on Oahu, giving educators new perspectives and tools to teach Pearl Harbor history in a more comprehensive way.
The support of the National Endowment for the Humanities has enabled
the collaborative to offer two workshops for summer 2008: July 26-August
1 and August
2-8. Applications to participate will be on-line
through the NEH website. Further details on activities and application
procedures can be found at the Pearl
Harbor program pages on the East-West Center website.
In 2005, Japanese secondary teachers participated in this professional development opportunity for the first time, creating a wider international dialogue and bringing a deeper understanding of the causes and effects of World War II.
